Update on the New Library

The County has approved the plans for the new library, and we are moving quickly to the next stage! The new library will be 52,000 square feet - more than twice our current size. The extra space gives the Library room to grow its collections, expand its reading and study capacity, and improve its computer facilities. Its new location allows for future expansion of the Library building.
Our new library will be South Carolina's first certified "Green" public library, a model of environmentally-advanced architecture in the state and country. It means that we'll have designed, built, and operated a facility with minimum impact on the environment, the chance to reap energy savings in the hundreds of thousands of dollars, a healthier environment for library users and staff, and recognition as a leader in environmental responsibility and education. Nearly everything in the new library has been chosen with the environment in mind:
- Area-sourced building materials.
- Windows allowing extensive use of day lighting.
- Carpeting and flooring made from bio-based fibers using agricultural waste from corn, rice, and beets.
- Counter tops, doors, and shelving end caps made from recycled metal and plastic resins.
Watch us as we grow!
